John Weigel
A graduate of Metamora High School, John Weigel was a two-time NCAA Division III national champion, winning the 1995 championships in cross country and the outdoor 10,000 meters in track. Competing for North Central College, John was all-American three times in cross country, three times in indoor track (5,000 meters) and six times in outdoor track (three times each at 5,000 and 10,000 meters). He is one of only seven runners named to the NCAA Division III All-Century team in cross country. In 1995, he was named NCAA Division III track and field Athlete of the Year. Coached at North Central by Greater Peoria Sports Hall of Famer Al Carius, John finished second in the Division III national cross country meet in 1993 and 1994. His performance in 1993 helped anchor a team championship that established a still-record score of 32 points. At Metamora, John was a three-time all-stater in cross country and six-time all-stater in track (1600 and 3200 meters). A four-year Academic All-American in college, John went on to earn an invitation to the 2000 U.S. Olympic Trials in the marathon, where he recorded a personal best of 2:21:26.
