Bergan High School produced its second straight Class A girls’ track championship through a total team effort - the Trojans scored 48 points, 11 more than second-place Teutopolis, without winning one event.

Coached this season by Sister Diane Franque, Bergan qualified a dozen athletes for relay and individual events and all 12 won at least one state medal.

Suzie Tuffey and Sandy Geier came the closest to a win for Bergan. Tuffey was second in both the 800 and 1600 meter runs, doing the 800 in 2:16.4 and the 1600 in 5:01.9, while Geier was second in the 200 meter low hurdle in 29.6 seconds.

Geier joined Julie Szidon, Cheryl Geier and Diane Joseph on the 400 meter relay team that finished fourth, Carrie Eggerichs was fourth in 58.7 in the 400 meter dash and the 1600 meter relay team of Amy Converse, Barb Beyers, Marie Pasquel and Eggerichs was third in 4:07.7.

The 800 medley relay team of Szidon, Joseph, Cheryl Geier and Annette Pisano finished sixth in 1:48.5 and Sandy Geler was sixth in the 200 dash in 26.8. Joan Murphy was seventh in the 3200 in 11:36.9.
