Mickey Schallau

One of the first women to coach an all-boys team, Mickey Schallau’s golf squads won five team trophies at Illinois state tournaments. From 1973-87, Mickey coached softball and both boys and girls golf at Academy of Our Lady/Spalding Institute, then all golf at Peoria Notre  Dame from 1988-2007. Her teams combined for a 486-178 record in dual matches and won 81 tournaments. Mickey’s teams at IHSA state tournaments placed second three times (Spalding boys 1978, AOL girls 1979, Notre Dame boys 2003) and third twice (AOL girls 1978, Notre Dame boys 2007). She coached 1976 IHSA boys state champion Tom Ferlmann and 1982 girls state runner-up Patty Ehrhart. Mickey also started the women’s golf program at Bradley University, where she coached for seven years. An inductee to the IHSA Golf Coaches Hall of Fame, Mickey founded the Peoria Notre Dame boys golf tournament in 2006. In 2016, the Journal Star named her AOL girls golf program the third-best in area history.
