Mary Kay Hungate
From 1974 to 1990, Mary Kay Hungate was head coach of two basketball teams and was first assistant to a third. Over 16 seasons those teams averaged three losses a season!
Her career coaching record of 428-50 included a 195-13 mark in seven years at Richwoods High School, where her 1983 team won the state crown, her 1981 and 1984 teams were second at state and her 1985 team was third.
Before and after her brilliant prep coaching career were college challenges.
She began the women's basketball program at Carl Sandburg College in Galesburg, where her father was men's coach, taking a brand new program to an 80-22 record in four seasons and qualifying for the National Junior College tournament in 1976.
In 1985, she went to perennial women's collegiate power Louisiana Tech as first assistant coach where the team went 153-15 in the five years she was on the staff, winning the national championship in 1988 and making the final four in her last four seasons.
In 1990, she switched to the administration side of athletics at Louisiana Tech as assistant athletics director. Currently she is Associate Vice President and Deputy Athletics Director, responsible for administration oversight for four sports and ensuring compliance with NCAA and Sun Belt Conference regulations.
While at Richwoods, she was named USA Today National Coach of the Year for 1985, was president of the Illinois Girls' Basketball Coaches Association in 1983, chosen Tri-County Sports Figure of the Year for 1983, named head coach of the inaugural Prairie State Games in 1984, and chosen as head coach of the South team in the first IBCA Girls' All-Star game.
