Carla McGhee
Carla McGhee has done it all in a truly fabulous basketball career.
In her senior year she lead Peoria Manual to the 1986 Class AA state title. At the University of Tennessee, she played a major role on two NCAA championship teams. She was a member of the unbeaten 1996 U.S. Olympic team that won the Gold Medal, and she played professional basketball both in the U.S. and abroad.
The 6-foot-2 standout averaged 20 points and 10 rebounds for Manual, leading the Rams to a 27-3 season, climaxing her prep career with a 24-point title game against Chicago Marshall.
Tennessee won NCAA titles in her freshman and junior seasons, the Vols going 35-2 in 1989 in winning their second title. An almost fatal car accident cost her sophomore season.
In all, she played 101 games for Tennessee, shooting .496, scoring 612 points and grabbing 516 rebounds.
From 1990-94 she played professional basketball in Germany, Switzerland, Italy and Spain. She was named to the 1995 U.S. Pan-American Games team, but the Games were cancelled.
She played in all eight games for the U.S. in the 1996 Olympics, shooting .385 and scoring 25 points and 14 rebounds as the U.S. rolled over Cuba, Ukraine, Zaire, Australia, South Korea, Japan, Australia again and Brazil. Prior to the Olympics, the team went unbeaten in a 52-game exhibition schedule.
She also played professionally in the WNBA and the ABL. At the time of her induction, she was an assistant basketball coach at Temple University in Philadelphia.
