Not even two days of rain could keep the Dunlap High School golf team from winning the first Class A state championship by a local team in the 1983 tournament at Arrowhead Country Club.

Climaxing a season that saw the Ray Hassett coached Eagles post a 14-0 mark in dual meets, Dunlap took a 10-stroke lead over Elgin St. Edward, 321-331 in the rain drenched opening day and then came back on day two to win 644-649 over St. Edward.

The state title was a particularly happy thing for Hassett because he not only wrapped up a 21-year career at Dunlap, but had the fun of coaching his twin sons on the way to the state title.

Tim Murphy shot a 77 to lead Dunlap on the first day, a round that would be the best for the Eagles in winning the state.

Jeff Hassett fired a 79, Gregg Simpson an 80, Mike Sullivan an 85, Scott Hassett 88 and Doug Brodine 90 on the first 18. St. Edward cut five strokes off the lead on Day Two as Sullivan shot 79, Jeff Hassett 82, Simpson 79, Scott Hassett 83, Murphy 84 and Brodine 92.

The low four scores counted in the team's total each day.

Earlier, Dunlap had won the 22-team Taylorville tournament, the 12-team Carlinville event and the 13-team Petersburg tourney. The Eagles were also second at Havana and third at Monmouth.

On the way to state Dunlap was third in regional play with Jeff Hassett finishing fourth and was second in the sectional where Jeff Hassett was ninth.
