Spalding's 9-0-1 season was Coach Merv Haycock's first undefeated Irish team and Spalding's first in 21 years. Led by Dick McQuellon, the team featured Brad Monroe, Mike Gilfillan, Bob Beckman, John Appleby and Mike Kelly. The only tie was a 7-7 standoff with unbeaten Pekin before 10,162 fans at Peoria Stadium.
