Metamora's 41-7 win over Geneseo in the Class 4A state championship game was the most lopsided of the eight finals played at Memorial Stadium in Champaign.
The Redbirds finished with 12 straight victories after suffering a 28-7 loss to eventual 5A quarterfinalist Washington in Week 2. The decision, which ultimately determined the Mid-Illini Conference championship, snapped Metamora's 35-game Mid-Illini winning streak.
The 4A playoff assignment was the first for Metamora, enrollment 985, since the state series was expanded from six to eight classes in 2001. The Redbirds were in 5A from 2001 through 2008, including when they won their first title under Ryan in `07.

Coached by Wayne Hammerton (GPSHOF class of 1996), the 1991-92 Richwoods Knights capped a 30-3 season with a runner-up finish to undefeated Maywood (Proviso East) at the University of Illinois (Champaign). On their journey to the championship game, Richwoods defeated Danville 67-53 at Peoria’s Carver Arena in the Super Sectional; Lincolnshire (Stevenson) 86-75 in the quarterfinals; and Rockford Boylan 47-46 in a semifinal thriller, before falling to defending champion Proviso East 42-31 in the championship game. Troy Taylor (Peoria Journal Star’s Class AA Player of the Year) received 1st Team All-Tournament honors and teammate, Sean Kimble was named to the 2nd Team. Kimble (48 points) was 2nd in tournament scoring for the 3 games in Champaign. Taylor was also selected to the Chicago Tribune All-State 3rdTeam.
