Inductees Illinois Central College and coach Lorene Ramsey won their second consecutive National Junior College Division II National championship in the 1992-93 season.
Entering the tournament at Hagerstown, Md. with a 28-4 record, the Cougars were ranked No. 2 nationally behind Mitchell College of Connecticut but wound up having to turn back a stubborn Illinois foe to win its second title.
ICC blitzed Scottsdale, Ariz., 83-74 in the first round and then rolled over Lansing, Mich., 73-59 in the semi-finals.
Facing Kankakee, Ill., in the title game, ICC sent the game into overtime on a three-point field goal by former Peoria Manual standout Joy Westendorf and then won 76-71 in the extra session to finish the second 31-4. Mandy Bryan from Olympia High School scored 24 points for ICC in the title game.
Laura Trantina of Washington was named most valuable player of the tournament as well as being selected an NJCAA all-American for the second time.
Bryan was selected first time all-Regional and all-National tournament. At the time of the team’s induction, Westendorf’s 11 assists in a national tourney game was still the NJCAA record.
Ramsey was named NJCAA Coach of the Year and Tri-County Female Coach of the Year for the second straight season.
Dick Weik Born in Waterloo, Iowa, Dick Weik moved to Peoria in 1941 and starred at Peoria High School. He broke into the majors with the Washington Senators in 1948 and pitched for five years at the big league level with Washington, Cleveland and Detroit. Weik appeared in 76 games during his career, finishing with a 5-23 record and 5.90 ERA. |
