Gus Moreland

Gus Moreland was a member of the United States Walker Cup team early in his golfing career, and he went on to win seven Peoria City Golf titles between 1936 and 1961. Moreland, who attended Bradley after moving from Texas, where he had compiled a brilliant tournament record, won his first city title in 1936 when he nipped Gene Modjeska 1-up in a 38-hole match. He also won five city titles in succession between 1944 and 1948, completely dominating the Peoria scene. Medalist in 1949, he then withdrew from the tournament.

Before he appeared on the local scene, Moreland had become a legend in Texas golf. Over three seasons, he won 21 invitational tournaments, winning the Texas Amateur in 1931-32-33. He was Houston Country Club Invitational tourney champion four times, had two unbeaten years as a member of the Walker Cup team, won the Trans-Miss tournament twice as well as the Western Amateur, the Mexican National title and finished second one year in the Texas Open. He was invited to the prestigious Masters tournament in 1934, two years before his first Peoria city title.
